Key

The following bare root trees are suitable for woodlands, forests, copses and hedgerow planting. Many of these are native trees (marked #). Always try to include some trees in your hedge, as these act as platforms and nesting places for songbirds etc. Please note that many of the plants listed in "Bare-root Hedge Plants" can also be used for woodland planting, particularly :

Beech, Hornbeam, Buckthorn, Hawthorn, Hazel, Field Maple, and Native Dogwood.

Most bare root trees available until mid April.

ALDER, COMMON (Alnus glutinosa) #

Medium sized native trees with yellow Spring catkins, best grown in wet soils. Will thrive on poor ground and even standing water.

Large tree with early Spring catkins and glossy dark green leaves contrasted by pale undersides. Makes a good wind-break. Grows well on most soils.

Pretty small tree prized for its white early Spring flowers and stunning Autumn colour. Grows well on most soils. Also works well in a mixed hedge.

ASH (Fraxinus excelsior) #

Fast growing native trees valued for their timber. Excellent for firewood, as it can be burnt green. Coppices well. Leaves fall at the first Autumn frost. Does best on heavy rich soils.

BIRCH, SILVER (Betula pendula) #

Graceful native woodland tree with silver striated bark in older trees. Leaves turn pale yellow in Autumn. Grows well in most soils.

Native wild crab apple trees with pale pink flowers in Spring and coloured fruits in Autumn, suitable for jam or cider making. For hedgerows and woodland edges.

DOGWOOD, RED STEMMED (Cornus alba sibirica)

Thicket forming shrub grown for its brilliant red stems in winter. For best results prune back hard every March. Inconspicuous white flowers in Summer followed by pale blue berries. Will grow in most soils.

Winter stems dark purple to black. Mixes well with other Dogwoods when planted in drifts.

PINE, SCOTS (Pinus sylvestris) #

Fast growing native pine, frequently used as a ‘nurse’ in woods to force hardwood trees to grow straight. Good cover and habitat for wildlife and will add winter interest to a wood.

WILD CHERRY (Prunus avium) #

Pretty Native Cherry trees with pure white flowers, followed by small fruit. Leaves turn crimson in Autumn. Richly coloured bark. Thrives on all but very wet soils.

WILLOW, GOLDEN (Salix alba vitellina)

Fast growing willow grown principally for its yolk-yellow shoots in Winter. Pruning to a stump should be carried every 2 years for the best effect. Will grow in most situations but prefer damp soils.

Native willow trees long used for basket making etc. Can be grown as ‘living structures’.

As above but with brilliant orange-scarlet stems. Prune every 2 years to a stump. Will grow in most situations but prefer damp soils.
